Class Descriptions

Beginners yoga

Yoga is a very personal practice and an individual journey for everyone who steps onto the mat. Everyone has their reason, some people use it as a form of exercise, for some it is a time of introspection and meditation. No matter what gets you on the mat, remember it is an uplifting practice that promotes physical health and mental wellbeing. In our beginners course we will give you a good foundation with introduction to basic yoga poses, breathing techniques and overall awareness. This class/course is suitable for beginners and those returning to yoga after an extended break from the practice.
Booked inline with school terms , you may join mid way though a term if there is space.

Vinyasa yoga

Vinyasa flow maintains awareness and focus on the breath while moving through a series of postures. The sequence of postures may be different from class to class, but will always follow an intelligent progression that moves from basic to complex. This style of yoga builds heat, flexibility and strength, while maintaining focus on good alignment and sound structure. Postures may be held for longer periods of time and will flow together to unite the body to the breath and mind. This class is suitable for all levels.
Can be booked as a single class £12 or avail of our 6 class pass £60 ( 10 wk expiry)

Mama & baby yoga

A great class for mamas to rejuvenate and restore their bodies all the while bonding with their precious young things and meeting other like minded Cheltenham mums.
The class is 60 mins with relaxation at the end. We provide all the mats etc all you need to bring is a small blanket for your baby to rest on.
Breaks for feeding ,nappy changes or snuggles to be expected. The aim of this class is to give mum a really good hour of postnatal yoga with baby on the mat ( no nursery rhymes!)
No previous yoga experience is necessary . Suitable from six weeks .

Pregnancy yoga

Prenatal/pregnancy yoga is suitable from 12 wks right up until baby arrives .
Preparation for birth using pranayama (yoga breathing techniques ) and movement in a calm, peaceful environment. Helping strengthen the uterus and pelvic muscles, improve circulation, aid in digestion, exercise the spine to ease back ache and increase overall comfort.
Yoga can also alleviate many of the discomforts of pregnancy such as nausea, constipation, varicose veins, swelling, back pain and sciatica.
A lovely opportunity to meet other Cheltenham soon to be mums . The class is 60 mins and previous yoga experience is not necessary.

Power yoga

Power yoga is an energetic and dynamic form of Vinyasa yoga. This class is best for people who are more experienced, are more body aware and have a basic familiarity with the postures and pranayama. More challenging sequences that cultivate mental and physical strength and stamina underpin this class.

Jivamukti yoga

Jivamukti literally means "liberation while living". This type of yoga is very recent having emerged in New York around 1984. The practice combines a vigorous form of Vinyasa along with an emphasis on spirituality. Each class incorporates a theme which is explored through the dharma talks, Sanskrit chanting, pranayama (breathing) and meditation. The teacher will offer hands-on adjustments and the class concludes with a deep relaxation. This class is suitable for all levels.

Ashtanga yoga

The original form of Vinyasa yoga, Ashtanga is a physically demanding flowing practice. The class is structured so that the student will be led through some or all of a set of series or postures practised in a particular order known as the Primary Series. This practice aims to build heat in the body linking poses together in a flowing sequence of movements timed to the breath. This class is open to all levels as each pose has modifications, it is all about exploration.

Teen Yoga ( from 11 yrs)

Yoga and mindfulness allows teens to relax, unwind and can help with the task of becoming an adult.
This is a 50 minute class ( 5 week course) which focuses on building strength and flexibility while relieving the stress of daily life. Our classes allow teenagers an opportunity to focus on themselves and take a break, while benefitting from the mind-body connection.
Each class includes a flowing sequence of asanas (poses), balance work, breathing techniques and relaxation all to some funky beats! This class requires parental consent.

The YFC class will specifically concentrate on the following : increasing full mobility in the hip joints. Strengthening postural muscles to encourage correct seated alignment and ease overuse of upper body and back strain. Building core strength. Lengthening the commonly overdeveloped quadriceps, hip flexors and tight hamstrings. Counteracting postures to balance out your overall position when sitting on the bike eg. backbends. Controlled breathing for increased exertion, endurance and efficiency.
The main aim of the class is that students learn how to strengthen and stretch mindfully in class and apply these at any point to pre or post ride and keep cycling related injuries at bay.

Meditation

Meditation is a practice that is over 3,000 years old. Seated Meditation is just as relevant or even more so for our hectic and chaotic modern lives. Learning to meditate isn't complex , esoteric or mysterious . It is simply about learning to sit quiet and still, noticing what is happening in the present moment . When we start to train our minds to do this we can begin to create space for our feelings , feeling calmer , more focused and less stressed with a greater sense of peace and wellbeing in our everyday lives.
